A  middle eastern wrap, the Chicken Shawarma Recipe is an on-the-go meal by itself. Packed in a Pita with shredded chicken, pickled veggies and a yummilicious yogurt or mayo spread, this recipe is a keeper.

Chicken Shawarma Recipe

This is a favourite dish that everyone loves to eat. Shawarma hails from the Middle Eastern region, which is considered as a meat preparation made with chicken, beef, lamb or turkey.

The meat is usually placed on a spit which is nothing but a vertical grill and roasted until the meat is cooked. Using a knife the meat is shaved to thin slices and then mixed along with some hummus, crunchy onions and wrapped with pickled cucumber and green chillies. 

Here at  Riyadhmommy we have recreated the shawarma in a simpler form so that you can easily try this out in your kitchen and surprise your family.

  • 3/4 tbs
  • Youghurt.
  • p Cumin Powder.
  • 3/4 tbsp Turmeric Powder.
  • 3/4 tbsp Coriander powder.
  • 3/4 tbsp garlic powder.
  • 3/4 tbsp Red Chilli powder.
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves.
  • 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper, more if you prefer
  • Salt
  • 8 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced.
  • 1 large Cucumber, finely chopped.
  • Spicy Mayonnaise.
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil.       

How to prepare Mayo Sauce.

  1. Add the Onions, Capsicum and Cucumbers with some coriander leaves and parsley. Now add the Mayonnaise. Sprinkle some salt and black pepper into it.

How to make chicken shawarma at home.

The secret is in the shawarma spice mixture, including warm spices including cumincorianderturmericpaprika and a tablespoon of Red chili powder if you like that spicy flavour. SO MUCH FLAVOR!

 1. Make the shawarma spice mixture. Simply add the spices into a small bowl and mix to combine.

2. Cut up some boneless, skinless chicken thighs into small bite-size pieces.  (you can use chicken breast if you like, this is just my personal preference.)

 3. Spice the chicken up, make sure to coat the chicken well with the spice mixture. Add onions, lemon juice, Yoghurt and extra virgin olive oil. If you have the time, cover and refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight (if you don’t, you can skip the marinating time, it’ll still be delicious).

4. When ready, lay the chicken shawarma on a large sheet pan. And bake in 425 degrees heated oven for 30 minutes or so (you can check a bit earlier as ovens do vary.) OR You can Fry them with some olive oil.

5. Now apply some plain Mayo to the pita bread or Khuboos. Place the fried Chicken on to the Bread. Place the Mayo Sauce with Veggies. You can also add some Fries if looking for restaurant style shawarma.

How to Serve Chicken Shawarma?

The true Middle Eastern way to serve chicken shawarma is in pita pockets or wraps with heaps of veggies and a good deal of sauce. I like the idea of loaded pita pockets. You can use Khuboos otherwise which is also a healthy option.

Muslim children are not required to fast for Ramadan until they reach the age of maturity (puberty). It is advised to follow the child’s lead and not force an action one way or the other. Here are the Tips to Help Kids fast in Ramadan.

Another option could be a food fast, avoiding food but allowing water/liquids. Remember that kids are just kids, so take it slow and be mindful of their needs throughout the day.

2. Set Goals.

If your child is keen to fast, ask them to set a goal of how many times they’d like to try. This gives children a sense of purpose and something to work towards.

3. Rewards aren’t Bribes.

Rewarding your kids for fasting is a very good way to make everything around interesting and exciting.

  1. Hot chocolate…or their favorite hot drink. Especially good in Winter.
  2. Do a puzzle. Together, or as a family. But make sure you finish it!
  3. What’s for dinner? Let them choose, not just for them but the whole family.
  4. Bonus screen time. Just a little extra. 15 mins more to say ‘good job’.

4. Make it Joyful.

Kids always try to imitate their parents, no matter what. This is the same when comes Fasting. Be a Good Role Model to your kids as they imitate and learn what you do. Make clear explaining them what you’re doing. Let it be Praying or Reading Duas.

The fasting period begins at a different time each year based on the moon cycles. But it’s usually sometime in April or May. And when celebrating with kids, is such a joyous phase.

While fasting may sound like an extreme practice to non-Muslims, this sacrificial blessing period is filled with Self- Reflection, family celebrations, and late-night meals. If you’re celebrating the holiday kids, it’s important to instill the traditional Muslim values while also bringing a little fun into the mix.


During the month of Ramadan, people of Islamic faith wake up before sunrise for a small meal. And then do not eat again until the sun sets at night. After 30 days of sacrifice, families hold a three-day celebration of fast-breaking called Eid al-Fitr. Muslim kids often receive gifts and indulge in treats during the festival.

According to Islamic law, children who have not yet reached puberty aren’t required to observe fasting. Still, some families have their children participate in the fast anyway, or they find other ways to teach their kids about devotion, generosity, goodwill, and self-control. You can also build excitement for Eid al-Fitr by displaying a countdown decoration in your home. Each day Ramadan progresses, your kids can cross off a number on the calendar.

Read themed books for Children.

Children’s books, like the book, “My First Ramadan,” by Karen Katz, introduce the principles of the Muslim faith to children. Appropriate for toddlers, this board book follows one young boy as he celebrates the holiday with his family. 

Teach Children Ramadan Greetings.

During Ramadan, faithful Muslims greet one other by saying “Ramadan Mubarak.” This greeting, which means “blessed Ramadan,” . It is just one traditional way that people welcome friends during this holy time.

You can add some fun to chance encounters by teaching your kids a more eloquent salutation. Like “Kul ‘am wa enta bi-khair,” which means, “May every year find you in good health.”

Why is it that to be a woman we must be so many things? She has to be beautiful, funny, strong (but not too strong), successful (but not that successful), and maternal (because what are you if you do not want babies?). Women, since ages have been the victim of Societal Pressure.

We have to be above all (but not above him), smart (but not smarter than him). Not only that, but we also have to adopt our own opinions and views. But, when there are men around that disagree, we have to shut the hell up.

3.Be Happy!! No Matter What..

You have to put a smile on your face. You cannot groan, or complain. You have to always be happy and content, or you will be labelled as annoying, always-whining, or ungrateful.

If you are not grinning from ear to ear, people will ask ” Are you OK?” or ” What’s wrong? What if nothing is wrong? What if I am totally fine? 

 Bottomline, to be happy is OK, to be sad is OK, or even not to show any feelings at all is also OK. Don’t let society push you. Be honest with your feelings. At a very young age, girls start to feel the need to stand out and accept the pressures of womanhood, just to please the society around them.

She has to be pretty. No matter what…No one understands whether you have been suffering a hormonal issue or its just that you have given birth to a baby..

How can you deal with it?

1. Choose your team..

This might be a bit diificult and a manipulative task for you. Not coming under anybody’s influence, but having minority of people in your life who can provide you unbiased suggestion or direction helps.

Now, why did I say Manipulative? It might get a bit tough while choosing your own crowd ( parents, Siblings, or a stranger), Since we get very hypocritical when choosing the right people.

2. Be proud & Content.

Whatever the choices maybe, we should be satisfied and content that they are for our betterment. We should be happy and proud of them. But according to my Rulebook, I believe that even if our decisions do not turn out to be the best for us, they still leave us with memories, wisdom and The Lessons for Life. Which can later on help us a lot in making better choices in our life. Isn’t It? Either way, it”s a win -win situation.

3.Warm up those Cold Feet.

There’s always a fear instilled in our minds, especially when you know there are people just waiting for you to fall. But when such thoughts strike, remember the fact that YOU ARE A HUMAN & HUMANS ARE ALLOWED TO MAKE MISTAKES!!

It’s true whatever decisions you make, people do always have an opinion about it. Opinions are according to their moods and mindset (good or bad) but if you are doing something that might make you the black- sheep of the crowd, it might make you a TRENDSETTER too!!!!

When I first started out making wedges, the one thing I was intimidated by was how to cut potatoes into the perfect shape wedge. Getting them crispy was another issue. BUT, it is actually the complete opposite as they are SO EASY to make!

Seasoning with paprikagarlic and onion powder, salt and pepper makes them super quick to throw together.

Why This Recipe Works?

  • The combination of spices adds a kick of flavor without the hassle of chopping garlic and onions.
  • Using low-fat cooking spray makes them less oily in taste and much healthier.
  • The flavors used makes them a versatile side dish that works with anything from fish to steak.


  • 6 large russet potatoes, rinsed
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 1/2 cup Wheat Flour
  • 1/2 cup Multi purpose Flour.
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic, (or 3 teaspoons garlic powder)
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons salt, (adjust to your tastes)
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon black cracked pepper
  • Cumin seeds
  • Oregano


  1. Start by washing the potatoes to get rid of any dirt.  Then cut each potato in half lengthwise, cut each half into 2-4 wedges (depending on size) so that you end up with 6-8 wedges from each potato.

2. Boil some water with salt in a pot and once starts boiling, put the sliced wedges into it .

Set a timer for 5 min. In this step, 50% of the potato is done.

3. In a small jug, combine the Wheat flour, Multi- purpose flour, cumin seeds. Sprinkle paprika, garlic powder, oregano, parsley onion powder, salt, and pepper.  


4. Now add the wedges into the prepared batter and let it settle for 2 min.

Who doesn’t love to eat the traditional Mutton/ Laham Mandi ? Ofcourse, we all love to try this.

Arabic Mutton Mandi or Laham Mandi is a traditional meat and rice dish (which is almost similar to Kabsa or Biryani ). This Dish is very much fond among the Middle east, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. The word Mandi comes from the arabic word, NADA, which means dew. Hence, reflects a dewy flavour when the meat is cooked.

This recipe has been originated in Yemen, but now very much common among Indians and Pakistanis.

Mutton Mandi

The Traditional Mutton/ Laham Mandi Recipe is prepared by roasting the mutton. Especially a young Lamb to enhance its flavour. Sometimes Mandi is prepared using chicken, but the traditional Mandi dish consists of mutton or lamb. We also add Raisins, Almonds, Cashews and Nuts fried in Butter for garnishing  to give that crispy crunch and flavour.

This Recipe is prepared with delicious Arabian Rice, i.e, cooked in moist Rice and a perfectly cooked tender mutton. The Mutton is fully cooked with Mandi Spices.

A combination of soft and tender Mutton/ Lamb Meat with aromatic rice along with Arabic style Tomato chutney will make you fall in love !!! Believe me!

However, I am giving this Traditional Mandi Recipe a DESI TWIST. But the changes are optional if you want to follow the traditional Arabian recipe, you can skip those ingredients.So, let’s start now!!

RECIPE- How to Make Arabic Laham Mandi at Home?

 Mandi Recipe is prepared with delicious Arabian Rice, i.e, cooked in moist Rice and a perfectly cooked tender mutton. The Mutton has to be fully cooked with  Spices.

Ingredients for Mutton Mandi Recipe

  • 400 gm Rice
  • 500 gm Mutton
  • Salt (As Needed)
  • 1 & 1/2 TBSP Mandi Masala 
  • Seasons Canola Oil-6 TBSP
  • 1 Medium Sized Onion
  •  Whole Cumin-1 TSP 
  • Whole Hot Spices -1 TBSP
  •  Green Chilies -2
  •  Garlic (Chopped)-1 TBSP 
  •  Red Chili Powder-1 TSP
  • Dry Ginger Powder -1 TSP
  •  Coriander Powder-1 TSP
  •  Cumin Powder-1 TSP 
  • 2 & 1/2 Glasses Hot Water
  •  Turmeric Powder-1 TSP 
  •  Butter

Ingredients for Mandi Masala

  •  Cloves powder -1 TSP
  •  Bay leaf powder-1 TSP 
  • Cardamom powder -1 TSP
  • Black Cardamom powder-1 TSP
  • Cinnamon powder-1 TSP
  •  Black Pepper powder-1 TSP
  •  Nutmeg powder-1 TSP 
  •  Roasted Coriander powder-1 TSP
  •  Roasted Cumin powder-1 TSP


Instructions for Mandi Masala

  • Put all the ingredients (Bay leaf powder, Cloves powder, Cardamom powder, Black Cardamom powder, Cinnamon powder, Black Pepper powder, Nutmeg powder, Roasted Coriander powder, Roasted Cumin powder, in a grinder and grind well.

Instructions for Mutton Mandi/Laham Mandi

  •  In a pot, add and marinate the mutton, salt, Mandi Masala, turmeric, Seasons Canola Oil.
  • Keep in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
  •  In a cooking pot, pour Seasons Canola Oil, onion, whole cumin, whole hot spices, salt, green chili and fry it until light brown.
  • Now , garlic chopped, marinated mutton,salt, red chili powder,black pepper crushed, dry ginger powder (sonth), coriander powder, cumin powder has to be added.
  •  Next, place hot water in it and steam for 30-40 minutes on low flame.
  • Now fry the Mutton in Ghee till light brown
  • The meat has to be soft.
Mutton Fry
  • Let the mutton out and add rice in the pot and cook for a while.
  • Afterward, add mutton on the surface of rice and steam.
  • In the end place a foil paper in the middle of rice with ember and butter and cover it for a while.
  • Garnish with some almonds,cashews , raisins and nuts fried in ghee.
  • Your tasty Mutton Mandi dish is ready to serve.
